To paraphrase Mel Brooks, it’s good to be the ‘Stangs.

What can you say about this past Saturday’s lineup of Gilroy High sporting events, other than good, good times? If you happened to have filled up the gas tank and headed up to San Jose last weekend to root the Mustangs on, here’s what you witnessed:

• A game-winning three-run homer by Joe Cano to lift the Gilroy baseball team over St. Ignatius in extra innings at the Los Gatos Tourney.

• Clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch by the GHS girls’ basketball team against Milpitas to book a ticket to the Central Coast Section Division I semifinals.

• And last but most definitely not least, a stellar showing by Gilroy’s powerhouse wrestling squad at the CCS Finals at Overfelt High, where the grapplers captured their third team title in as many years and four individual championships.

Heck, if you had any energy left over on Sunday, you could have enjoyed the Gavilan softball team’s victory in the title game of their home tournament … just in case the good times weren’t rolling quite good enough already.

As for Saturday, there was a certain symmetry to way events unfolded.

First, a leisurely afternoon baseball game at Los Gatos High’s state-of-the-art suburban ballpark, where an expensive PA system blasted tunes for the fans between innings.

Next stop, the classy basketball facility at Leland to watch the girls in front of a friendly but partisan crowd.

Finally, the packed-to-the-rafters gym at Overfelt, where the atmosphere was just as gritty as the wrestling.

Yep, it was a good day.
