Earthquakes, city closer to deal
The Morgan Hill City Council directed city staff to move forward on a public-private partnership with the Earthquakes to negotiate exclusively with the city for a long-term lease of the Outdoor Sports Center. If the deal goes through, the Earthquakes would operate the center on behalf of the city.
San Jose Earthquakes officials indicated that if they got a favorable response from the city, they would focus solely on their preferred site at 16695 Condit Road, home of the closed Golden Oak Restaurant, for their team training center. According to city staff, the Earthquakes have site control of the property and have requested a permit for using it as a training center.
Earthquakes officials said they intend to keep the Golden Oak building intact, and use it for strength training, a players lounge, locker room and conference rooms.

Kniss now chair of Leadership Team
Supervisor Liz Kniss, representing the County of Santa Clara at the National Association of Counties (NACo), has been appointed by NACo President Don Stapley as the new Chair of NACo’s Sustainability Leadership Team.
“As the new chair of the Sustainability Leadership Team at NACo, I will work with my colleagues to further define the meaning of sustainability and bring the message to our Washington leadership,” Kniss said.
Kniss, together with her colleagues in the Board of Supervisors, has played a leadership role in adopting environment-friendly policy and practices in Santa Clara County. Under this leadership, the county has invested $3.2 million in energy conservation projects and achieved nearly $1 million per year in energy savings over the past few years.
Each year, more than 2.3 million pounds of hazardous waste are collected through the county’s Household Hazardous Waste Program. Kniss championed the creation of the county’s Integrated Pest Management program to reduce pesticide use on county properties, including its 28 regional parks.
Earn extra cash working for census
In Spring 2009, hundreds of Santa Clara County residents will be hired to work locally as census workers for Census 2010. The local census office has started the recruiting process and is encouraging residents to join this endeavor.
“Census 2010 brings great employment opportunities to our community,” said Melissa Erickson, County of Santa Clara Census 2010 Project Manager.
Census workers will be hired as lister, crew leader, crew leader assistant or field operations supervisor. Depending on their positions, the workers will be paid $22 to $25 an hour.
Basic qualifications for applicants include U.S. residency, at least 18 years of age, a valid Social Security number and passage of a background check. Field workers should also have a valid driver’s license. Applicants will also be tested on their clerical, reading, math and organizational skills. For a sample test and to learn more about Census 2010, go to: www.census.gov. To apply for positions and schedule testing with Census 2010, call 1-866-861-2010.
“The census result affects political representation and directs the allocation of billions of dollars in government funding,” said James Kamenelis, Local Census Office Manager.
Every year, more than $300 billion in federal funds is awarded to states and communities based on census data. The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States, both citizens and non-citizens. The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years. The first census was conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau in 1790.
The Census Bureau is legally bound to protect the confidentiality of individual respondents and their households for 72 years.
