The Silicon Valley Glory 18-Gold fastpitch softball team won the
United States Specialty Sports Association Northern California
State Championship in Hayward Sunday by finishing the three-day
tournament undefeated.
HAYWARD – The Silicon Valley Glory 18-Gold fastpitch softball team won the United States Specialty Sports Association Northern California State Championship in Hayward Sunday by finishing the three-day tournament undefeated.
Melinda Ortiz pitched a no-hitter to give SVG a flawless 5-0 win over the Milpitas Renegades in Sunday’s championship game. Ortiz had seven strikeouts and also scored a run.
Glory scored one run in the second inning, when third baseman Adrianna Osuna hit a double down the left field line, and Emily Castro followed with a RBI double.
Alissa Castro led off the third with a base hit, moved over to second on a single by Jasmine Perez, and later scored on another single, this time by Lindsay Holt.
Glory added three more runs in the fourth. Emily Castro led off with a single, followed by singles by Melanie Morelos, Ortiz, Alissa Castro, and Michelle Sosa. Emily Castro, Morelos, and Ortiz all scored.
Samantha Parraz pitched a 2-hit shutout against the Renegades on Saturday for a win, while Ortiz accomplished the same feat a day earlier in a 1-0 first-round victory.
Standout plays in the field were made by Elaina Vasquez, Alissa Castro, Nicole Laboto, Adrianna Osuna and Morelos to name just a few.
The top three batters of the weekend were Emily Castro, with a .500 average, Alissa Castro (.444), and Perez (.428). Morelos, Ortiz, Parraz, and Sosa all batted .333.
“These girls played good ball, and they were on top of it all weekend long,” said Manager Joey Gonzalez, who also coaches the junior varsity softball team at Gilroy High.
For the season, Glory went undefeated in all USSSA tournaments. Overall, Glory has had a fall season of 18-9, with several of those losses by only one run.
