A caller lets the Green Phone know that seniors have played a
super role in one Gilroy High team’s season.
Caller:
This phone call is to support and give a lot of credit to this year’s Gilroy boys soccer team as they are about to embark on a hopeful repeat of last year’s Central Coast Section Division I championship. Unfortunately, Gilroy did not achieve their goal of winning the TCAL league, but they still have an opportunity to win the CCS and they’ll start on that Wednesday (2 p.m.) at Santa Clara. In particular, I would like to recognize last Tuesday, in the game versus Salinas, we had the Senior Night. There are nine seniors on the Gilroy team that should be recognized starting with: Marcial Gonzalez, Jairo Rodriguez, Victor Mendoza, Edgar Hernandez, Oscar “Huero” Zuniga, Eric Miller, Jose Armando Hernandez, Randy Moya and Kevin Grove.
These nine seniors have been the leaders of this year’s team and with their leadership we’re hoping to have another successful run in the CCS. … Good luck to this year’s soccer team.
Green Phone:
This caller touched on an important ingredient to every successful team and that’s leadership. While you don’t have to be a senior to be a leader, if you’ve watched the Gilroy High boys soccer team play this season, there’s no denying that the seniors have had a huge role in a very strong regular season, in which the Mustangs were consistently ranked in the section’s top three. Since we’re on the senior tip right now, let’s also recognize seniors from other Gilroy High winter squads that have done a great job.
Gilroy High girls soccer: Ariana Alvarado, Amparo Nery Arteaga, Jenessa Barnes, Kristi Figueroa, Janet Gonzalez, Maritza Gonzalez and Sara Hugo.
Gilroy High boys basketball: Kendrick Azcueta, Jason Conrad, Ryan Costa, Lorenzo Dobson, Stephen Galtman, Derek Jensen, Marshad Johnson and Kevin Siha.
Gilroy High girls basketball: Breanna Mah, Angela Silveira, Stephanie Solorio and Vanessa Wilkins.
Gilroy High wrestling: Tim Ibanez, Travis Sakamoto, Tim Caspary, Ethan Ogle, Hunter Collins and Jesse Rogers.
