Kristen Munson to leave her job in the publishing industry and dive
into journalism.

Gilroy – The Boston Red Sox inspired many last summer while on their road to breaking the 86-year-old curse. They inspired Bostonian Kristen Munson to leave her job in the publishing industry and dive into journalism.
An avid fan, she followed the Red Sox story closely through articles in the Boston Herald, which she had plastered all over her cubicle walls. She realized she was tired of doing the same thing each day, and missed the variety she had experienced as an intern at an area newspaper.
“I realized I was working in the wrong job,” said Munson, 24.
The Tufts University graduate then worked for a year as an editorial assistant with The Boston Herald, starting last February, covering general assignments, including the arts, sports, and crime.
“I really think The Boston Herald is the best sports paper in Boston and that’s why I started working there,” she said. “I had fun when I was out on different assignments, and you’re always learning something new.”
Munson joined The Dispatch last week and will cover education issues.
“I think she brings a wonderful energy to the job,” Executive Editor Mark Derry said. “She’s got some good previous experience, and she’s genuinely interested in education. I think she’ll get up to speed very quickly.”
Munson said she was looking to work with a daily newspaper where she could write full-time. Having visited different areas of California, Munson said she was excited about moving west.
“I’d never lived outside Massachusetts, and I had a co-worker at the Herald who had worked (at The Dispatch) and liked it,” Munson said.
Munson takes over the education beat from Katie Niekerk, who joins the Lifestyles section of The Dispatch and sister papers Morgan Hill Times and Hollister Free Lance.
“I’m excited to be taking over a new position in the paper’s Lifestyles section,” Niekerk said. “I’ve enjoyed reporting on education, and now I look forward to working on features for all three papers.”
