Entering the fourth quarter, Gilroy High’s boys basketball team was in great position with a 48-37 lead over the host Alisal Trojans.
But a cold fourth quarter in which the Mustangs couldn’t buy a bucket allowed the game to slip through Gilroy’s grasp, as the Trojans went on to outscore the Mustangs 23-7 in the final eight minutes and win 60-55.
“The kids played hard, they really did,” Gilroy assistant coach Jeremy Dirks said. “There were some execution problems at the end, which has been the story all year.
“We were actually up by 11 at one point and the wheels fell off. No real reason why, we just couldn’t really score.”
The Mustangs had a two-point lead, 30-28, at halftime, and were able to push that lead to 11 after an 18-7 third quarter.
But the Trojans forced several turnovers in the fourth, and Christian Camacho (13 points) hit two big threes in the final period to rally.
Gilroy was led by senior guard Kevin Siha, who scored 20 points and made four three-pointers. Marshad Johnson topped 20 rebounds for the second-straight game for the Mustangs, grabbing 22 total.
Lorenzo Dobson had a strong game in the post for Gilroy, scoring 11 and snatching 15 rebounds. Derek Jensen finished with 11 points for the Mustangs.
The game marks the end of Gilroy’s season. The team finishes with an 8-19 record, 2-10 in the Tri-County Athletic League. Alisal closed the regular season 13-12, 6-6 TCAL.
