Dear Editor,
As I stood at the corner of Monterey and 10th Street this year
and watched the parade pass by, it reminded me of why the committee
does all the work to put on the parade. The waving flags, the old
and young waving hands, band music and smiling faces.
Priceless.
&
amp;#8194;
It was very unfortunate the park activities had to be canceled
because of the CalFire base camp. But knowing the hard work they
were doing made it OK.
&
amp;#8194;First, I would like to thank the members of this
year’s committee whose hard work over the last six months made the
day’s activities possible.
Recognition for those who ensured the Memorial Day parade success

Dear Editor,

As I stood at the corner of Monterey and 10th Street this year and watched the parade pass by, it reminded me of why the committee does all the work to put on the parade. The waving flags, the old and young waving hands, band music and smiling faces. Priceless.

It was very unfortunate the park activities had to be canceled because of the CalFire base camp. But knowing the hard work they were doing made it OK. First, I would like to thank the members of this year’s committee whose hard work over the last six months made the day’s activities possible.

Jesse Sanchez was responsible for the remembrance at the Gavilan Cemetery. Mark and Kurt Jacobsen ran the parade staging area and registration. Bob Dillon was responsible for the parade. Heide Unger organized all the park events. She also helped Bob with preparing the parade route. Carl Epolite ran the car show and the car groups in the parade, making sure all the VIPs had cars to ride.

Jeff and Barbara Orth processed entries, wrote scripts and organized judges and announcers. My wife, Jackie, did all the artwork for the posters and handled meeting minutes and agendas. Wal-Mart came through for the seventh year with the lion’s share of financial support. I could never thank them enough. Glen Loma Ranch, Shapell Homes, Terra Law Firm and Central Coast Closets provided the balance of support. Hanson & Fitch Temporary Site Services deserve thanks for their services and the Verizon Wireless donation. I also want to thank the community for coming out and making Memorial Day such a success.

We were there to honor those who did not come home. Because of their sacrifices we enjoy our freedoms. Thus the theme, “Your Freedom, Their Lives.”

School board, editorial board have it all wrong on high school borders

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the newspaper’s editorial titled “Keep the boundaries for GHS and CHS as recommended.”

I was really upset and take much offense to the remark “that the only real criticism is being hurled from a “pocket of parents whose children attend Luigi Aprea Elementary School.” Well, I am a parent whose child does attend Luigi Aprea School, and my child will be attending Gilroy High School. I am not upset that GHS will be the school that she will attend, because GHS is a great school. What upsets me is that all of the kids and her friends who she has grown up with since kindergarten, and then go to Brownell with, she will basically lose because she will attend a completely different high school.

It’s hard enough starting high school, but to go to high school without any of her friends there to help with the change will be very hard. I do not understand why the school board does not make the boundaries by elementary school. If your child goes to this elementary school, then this is the middle school and high school they will attend. It has nothing to do with which school is better or how far we must drive or have our child walk (which by the way she will not be doing, it is to dangerous to walk on Santa Teresa).

The elementary schools are already socio-economically divided so why split up a school, where children and friends are their neighbors, just because we live on the other side of the street? It is ridiculous. Thank you very much.
