THIS WEEK’S WEB POLL:
Should the mayor of Gilroy have the power to control the items placed on the City Council’s agenda?
Yes: 6 No: 5
â– Yes. If input from Council members is submitted well in advance and relevant to what city staff are working on, that is fine. However, bringing an item up at a City Council meeting one week before the following meeting, that no one is prepared to address, especially financially, is very inappropriate.
â– Yes, but he should solicit and consider the input of other Council members.
â– Yes. Someone needs to monitor it.
â– No. The mayor cannot lawfully elevate himself above the rest of Council for this important function.
â– Oh, hell no.
â– My Web site response was no. However, after further consideration, I believe the mayor should have “provisional” control over the agenda. That is, the mayor should set the agenda providing the majority of the council concurs. If not, a simple majority of the council could request agenda changes.
