Both of Gilroy’s Boys Minors teams playing in the Tournament of Champions pulled off stunning victories this week.
Gilroy’s American League Angels won a second-round contest Wednesday, beating the Watsonville National/Salsipuedes Yankees 7-6. It was the Yankees’ first loss of the season. Trailing 3-0, the Angels rallied late and eventually took the lead on passed balls. The team will resume play Saturday at 1 p.m. at Field A1 of Gilroy Sports Park.
The National League Mets pulled off an equally entertaining victory by the same score, topping San Lorenzo Valley 7-6. Tied 6-6 at the beginning of the sixth inning, the Mets scored to take a one-run lead into the bottom half of the frame. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, the Mets pulled off an unusual double-play as Noah Vasquez threw to D-Ray Perll, who got the force out at second base, and then threw to catcher Jimmy Lemberger, who tagged the runner out at home plate to end the game.
The Mets will also be playing Saturday at 1 p.m., on Field A2. Opponents for both teams have yet to be announced.
