GILROY – A 7-0 sweep of the Alisal Trojans gave eight seniors from Gilroy High’s girls tennis team a chance to take a bow in their final match at home Tuesday.

Three of the four singles matches went to a tiebreaker, while the Mustangs’ three doubles pairings all won in straight sets.

“It was so great to see,” Gilroy coach Jamie Reynolds said. “I wish our season wasn’t coming to end, we are just getting going.”

No. 1 singles player Meha Munshi bounced back from a three-set defeat to Nicole Saldana earlier in the season by besting the Trojan’s top player 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.

“Meha played some great aggressive points that led her to a much needed victory for herself,” Reynolds said. “It was a heartfelt moment to see a wonderful player, in my mind, finally see herself as a good tennis player. I am very proud of her and what she did out there.”

Emily Castro, Gilroy’s No. 2, also found redemption on the court, beating Genevieve Brueta 1-6, 6-2, 10-8. The win followed a defeat for Castro in their previous match.

“Emily showed her perseverance and played much better in the second set, getting more balls back and playing smarter,” Reynolds said.

No. 3 singles player Monica Liu was the first Mustang off the court, beating Amanda Salazar 6-2, 6-3 in quick fashion.

Alissa Castro edged Cynthia Rodriguez in the closest contest of the day – 4-6, 6-1, 12-10 – for a No. 4 singles victory.

Holly Hunter and Kim Johnson “gave the audience a great show,” Reynolds said, by beating Mayra Juarez and Jennifer Camacho 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles draw.

No. 2 partners Melanie Morelos and Ashley Nguyen breezed by Jermine Rabahal and Mitzi Ambriz 6-2, 6-3, and Viviana Mendez and Cristina Carrillo (No. 3 partners) topped Karla Guillen and Esther Rios 6-3, 6-4.

The last regular season match of the season for Gilroy will take place Thursday at 4 p.m. at San Benito. The Mustangs will then compete in the Tri-County Athletic League tournament Saturday in Salinas.

With several players competing in a softball tournament that same day, and only the top two singles players and doubles pairings from Gilroy allowed to compete in the tournament, Monica Liu will slide in as the Mustangs’ No. 2 singles player while Viviana Mendez and Cristina Carrillo fill in for Melanie Morelos and Ashley Nguyen.
