Robert L. Bacon, Sr.

Robert L. Bacon was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Bac attended Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) where he met Margaret Jane Van Epp. After graduation from Miami University, Bac enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he quickly learned to fly, and was promoted to flight instructor.

In 1942, he and Jane married. They had three children – Skip (Robert Jr), Kathy, and Barbara. After the war, Bac flew for United Air Lines for a short time. In the 1950s, the family moved to California in pursuit of a new career in the emerging aerospace industry. He retired from Lockheed in 1982.

Bac and Jane enjoyed their early retirement. Sadly, Jane developed Alzheimer’s. After years of caring for her, Bac agreed it was time for professional care. He moved in with Barbara and her family in 2000, and visited Jane every day at Pacific Hills Manor until her death in 2001.

He continued to live with Barbara and her family – frequenting O’Henry’s Donuts, Sizzler, and Betsy’s Restaurant. Neighbors greeted him during his daily walks along the path. In June, he moved to Valley Pines Assisted Living, and in September to Pacific Hills Manor (where he passed on October 10th).

Bac was preceded in death by his wife, Jane, and daughter, Kathy. Surviving are his son, Skip (Calaine) Bacon of Pasco, WA; daughter Barbara (Bob) Mancini of Morgan Hill; son-in-law John (Pat) Sidorski of Napa; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

A private service was held for the family on October 12th.
