Mayor Al Pinheiro and Gilroy Police Chief Denise Turner honored dozens of residents who have participated in the city’s Neighborhood Watch Program, the city’s anti-graffiti and gun education programs and the Volunteers in Policing Program.

Among the award recipients was Joe Charles of Lewis Street. The 67-year-old recently witnessed a tagger defacing property and called police, who ended up arresting the individual.

“I don’t wait to see it. I go looking for it,” Charles said of the two hours he has spent driving around looking for graffiti each night and each morning for the past 10 years. “It’s an interesting job to do, and it helps the community.”
