Gilroy resident Joe Kline returned to visit St. Mary School, where he attended elementary school, last Friday to visit his grandson, Tyus on Grandparents Day.

This annual event brought more than 300 grandparents to campus for a day of activities. For the first time this year, 10 members of Gilroy Senior Center traveled to St. Mary for the day to spend time with students who would not have grandparents visiting their classrooms.

Guests for the day traveled from Oregon, Washington, Michigan and even South Africa.

After a liturgy in the church, honorees moved to the gym for refreshments, prepared by school parents, before their classrooms activities. Once in class, teachers had prepared computer activities, puzzles, songs, games and crafts for grandparents and special friends to join in with students.

St. Mary School enrolls students grades K-8 and has been a part of the Gilroy community since 1871.

“If smiles could be a measure of the day’s success, we definitely went over the top today,” said Vicki Campanella, director of development. “Grandparents can’t wait for next year’s event!”
