Dear School-bound, Red Phone finds it frustrating as well that you would not know where to go to school next fall. Red Phone knows your children have more important things to think about than boundaries (say, fashion), so we contacted Christopher High School Principal John Perales. Perales said the boundary committee and the school board adopted the suggested boundaries Aug. 7. Perales said the boundaries head west on Leavesley Avenue (away from the outlets), turn right on Church Street, left on Mantelli Drive and continue west on Mantelli Drive. Everything on the west side of Santa Teresa Avenue and on the north side of Mantelli Drive is Christopher High School area.
Perales said that though the boundaries are written up, students and parents can still opt to choose which school they attend. Gilroy High is more oriented toward biotechnology while Christopher High is oriented toward digital media and the performing arts.
“Yes, there will be a choice. Dr Flores (superintendent) and I are working on the protocol of what that looks like and hope to have that out after the holiday break. So there will be some type of choice given some specific protocol, specific criteria and we’re still working on that,” Perales said.
“The program issue will come up and parents will have to study that and make a decision what their children are passionate about,” he said. And friends make an influence as well.
A map of the boundaries is available on the school district’s Web site, or you can check out a map on the Gilroy Dispatch’s Web site from an Aug. 7 article. It is not entirely updated but is easier to read. The people living within the boundaries will be notified soon with a letter in the mail.
Traffic is a problem
“I’m calling about a problem in the corner of Orchard Drive and 10th Street, just in front of the high school. We need some traffic lights or stop signs of some kind there. In the mornings while going to school, it is a mess there and I feel sorry for the residents on Orchard trying to get out of their driveway. The reason why the traffic is slow is because of the people crossing the street. We need a traffic officer or something to move traffic and cross pedestrians faster. I’m also afraid that someone just might get hit one day.”
Dear Worried, Red Phone likes to see that a driver is thinking about other drivers. It’s encouraged. We contacted Don Dey, city transportation engineer. A traffic signal takes a couple years to be designed and constructed, Dey said.
“We don’t have any way right now of addressing the issues right now on 10th Street. There are pedestrians all along 10th Street crossing and parents making U-turns,” said Dey.
“There are complicated issues with which there’s not a simple single solution. The trade-off is you (get) more congestion but more safety. That’s better than having more traffic flow and more safety problems,” he said. Dey said there is a crossing guard there to help the pedestrians.
Comments section has familiar words
“You might want to double check anything that says ‘sur’, ’13’, ’14’ or ‘Nor’ ‘North Gilroy’, ‘408’ … all those are little gang affiliated symbols and stuff.”
Dear Concerned, Thanks for the heads-up. We are aware they exist and are a problem and we’re not looking to further a gang war. However 408 is an area code for most Gilroy residents so we can’t just outlaw its use if it is not in the gang context.
