With triple digit temperatures expected throughout the week, the National Weather Service has issued an “Excessive Heat Watch” for today through Thursday. Cooling Center locations will be open in Santa Clara County to help residents stay cool.

In Gilroy, the Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. City officials are monitoring the situation on a day-by-day basis. Call 846-0414 for more information.

In Morgan Hill, the Centennial Recreation Center, 171 W. Edmundson Ave., is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and the Morgan Hill Community & Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

High temperatures are expected to reach 101 today, 102 Wednesday and 103 Thursday before cooling slightly to 98 Friday.

The excessive heat prompted state power officials to promote energy conservation. The California Independent System Operator, the agency that monitors the state’s power grid, says peak energy demand could approach the record set in July 2006.

The agency is asking utility consumers to reduce power use in the late afternoon when air conditioners drive electricity use to the highest point of the day.

Weather Service forecaster George Cline says the heat wave is expected to last into the weekend.

In Southern California, plans were under way to help people cope with the heat, expected to hit full force later in the week. Los Angeles County officials opened cooling centers for older residents and others trying to find shelter from the heat.

Officials urged those unable to get to cooling centers to visit libraries, malls or parks to stay cool.
