Gilroy High’s boys volleyball team closed out its regular season with three straight wins, the final coming in three games over Salinas Thursday night: 25-19, 25-13, 25-10.
Honoring six seniors before the game – Filemon Bobadilla, Michael Leininger, Sean O’Neill, Kevin Bruce, Roman Guerrero and Paolo Palao – might have caused a slow start but it didn’t stop the Mustangs from earning its first 20 win season since 2006. Gilroy will enter the Central Coast Section playoffs starting next week with a 20-13 record overall, 10-4 in the Tri-County Athletic League – good for third place in the TCAL.
Bruce led the Mustangs with 8 kills to go with 3 blocks, Steven Valdez and O’Neill both had five kills, and Leininger had an all-around performance with one block, two kills, nine digs and 15 service points, two of which were aces. Thomas Costa had five service points and Alfred Medenceles had six digs.
Guerrero had 10 assists while Greg Calimpong led Gilroy with 17.
