Beginning with the grand opening of the new Morgan Hill Library at 660 W. Main Ave. on July 21, 2007, the Friends of the Morgan Hill Library have been offering books, audio and video recordings for sale in their store at its new permanent location in the library.
The store is staffed by volunteers and is open 33 hours a week. About 35 people volunteer their time to sort books and stock the shelves, as well as staff the store and make sales. Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate is among the dedicated volunteers.
The materials sold consist mostly of items donated by the community that cannot be used by the library. The price of materials ranges from 25 cents for children’s paperbacks to $1 for general adult books to several dollars for art books and collectible titles. The children’s books are especially popular.
You can help support the bookstore by donating your used books. The store accepts good quality, up- to-date items. Donations are accepted at the Bookstore, or at the accounts desk of the library if the store is closed. They do not accept outdated, damaged or dirty books, textbooks or encyclopedias. Nor can they use magazines, games or VHS tapes.
If you would like to donate items, please remember, if you wouldn’t give it to a friend of yours, don’t give it to the Friends of the Morgan Hill Library.
All proceeds from the bookstore go to support the Morgan Hill Library. Funds are used to support programs for children, teens and adults, the Summer Reading Club events and prizes, special materials for the collection, like the Bestseller collection and book discussion books, and special equipment for both inside and outside of the Library.
In addition to the bookstore, the friends have large quarterly sales which they set up in the Library Program Room. The next quarterly Big Book Sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 14 with members-only preview night on Friday, June 13, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. You can become a member of the friends for $10. Sign up at the bookstore or at preview night.
Friends of the Morgan Hill Library members are encouraged to volunteer to staff the store. You can sign up for 2- or 3-hour blocks. Contact Carol O’Hare, at (408) 782-9029 or cb*****@****ic.com, to be entered in the on-line scheduling calendar.
If you haven’t had a chance to visit the new Morgan Hill Library or the bookstore, you are in for a treat. Mark your calendar for the bookstore open hours, or the June quarterly sale on June 14 and come in for a visit.
