After losing Savanna Dalke to injury for what could be the rest of the season, the Mustangs are one athlete short of putting together a full roster. But in competition against St. Francis last Thursday, Gilroy got results that could propel several individuals towards a Central Coast Section invitation later in the season.

Veronica Kelly placed second in the floor competition with a score of 8.45 and third on the uneven parallel bars with an 8.25, Alexa Ferguson took second on the bars with an 8.4 and third on the balance beam with an 8.0, Kayla Loving-Scott took second in the floor with an 8.45 and Shannon Hubbard took fifth in the floor with an 8.25.

“I had five girls on varsity who were working towards qualifying on floor so now I would say I’ve got four who can qualify and from there we’ll see,” Gilroy coach Nicki Anagnoston said, noting that Dalke is still an active member of the squad that plays a pivotal role in keeping the team’s morale high. “It’s disappointing, but were looking towards next season.”

While there was a mix-up in the scoring system against St. Francis, the tentative result for the junior varsity squad was a 169.85-163.8 victory.

Both the varsity and JV team will be competing today against Mercy High School at 6 p.m. at Gymtowne gymnastics club in San Bruno.
