I was driving down Santa Teresa Boulevard and there are real
estate signs for Gilroy Independence and they’re chained to light
posts on the sidewalk. Do people pay to do that? But they’re there
permanently and it looked like it got in the way of a lady with a
baby stroller at Welburn and Santa Teresa. Just doesn’t seem to be
right. Thanks, bye.

City reacts, removes signs

“I was driving down Santa Teresa Boulevard and there are real estate signs for Gilroy Independence and they’re chained to light posts on the sidewalk. Do people pay to do that? But they’re there permanently and it looked like it got in the way of a lady with a baby stroller at Welburn and Santa Teresa. Just doesn’t seem to be right. Thanks, bye.”

Dear It’s Not Right,

You are right. Red Phone contacted Code Enforcement Officer Scott Barron, who said those signs were in violation of the sign ordinance and have been removed. Again, Red Phone thanks its alert readers.

Old theater changing use

“Hey Red Phone, driving south on U.S. 101 through Gilroy, I can see renovations occurring at the old movie theater in the back corner of that shopping center. What’s going in there?”

Dear Movie Goer,

Red Phone contacted Bill Faus, planning director, who said a motorcycle parts store will move into the renovated old theater. He did warn, however, that the use has changed a number of times in the last year, so things could change.

Cat is driving us crazy

“We have got an obnoxious, annoying cat that’s roaming our neighborhood. I don’t know who it belongs to. All my neighbors claim it’s not theirs and don’t know who it belongs to either. He’s a big Tom and he’s sneaking into our house via our cat door and chasing our cats. He’s peeing on our car tires and our front entrance.

“Is there anything we can do with this cat that’s roaming the neighborhood and leaving us in a stink? Also, he’s not neutered. Are there any violations? Would love to take this cat off to the pound.”

Wow, kitty chaos.

Dear Annoyed,

Red Phone contacted Aaron Avila in animal control. He said one solution is to use a trap.

“You are placed on a waiting list and then given a cat trap for up to a week,” he said. “The trap is safe and humane. Once the cat is trapped, we suggest taking it to the Humane Society of Silicon Valley.” They are at 2530 Lafayette St., Santa Clara. They can be reached at (408) 727-3383. To request of a cat trap, call 846-0340.

Ironically, the animal must be taken all the way to Santa Clara because the San Martin Animal Shelter only accepts animals found in or surrendered from unincorporated areas of South County. But, that’s another story.

Lu-‘CHESS’-a vs. Lu-‘KESS’-a

“The correct way to pronounce Luchessa is Loo-KESS-ah, not the “chess” way.”

Dear Mr. Pronunciation,

Looking for the easy way out, Red Phone placed several calls to Walter Luchessa, unfortunately he did not return messages. Hey Walter, if you’re out there, call Red Phone. So, then calls were made to several longtime Gilroyans, who said as far as they know it’s pronounced Loo-CHESS-a. But, looking to confirm, Red Phone contacted a Dispatch employee’s father, a first-generation Italian. He also said it’s pronounced Loo-CHESS-a. If it had two ‘C’s’, it would be pronounced with the hard ‘K’ sound. Red Phone then called Louis Lucchesi to see if his name is pronounced Loo-KESS-e, unfortunately, his phone number blocks calls. Hey Louis, call Red Phone.

So good caller, unless you have further information, we’ll continue to pronounce it Loo-CHESS-a.
