Gilroy High’s boys volleyball team came up just four points short of beating host Monterey and sharing second place in the Tri-County Athletic League last Thursday.

The Mustangs won the first game 31-29 and the third game 25-17, but dropped the second and fourth games 16-25 and 20-25, respectively. The all-important fifth game was won by Monterey 15-11.

Gilroy coach Sue Grogan said she was proud of the effort her team put forth, but couldn’t help but feel like the difference was points given away.

“I think we played really well,” Grogan said. “I think if our serving had been on that game would have ended differently.”

Kevin Bruce had 20 kills, eight digs and two blocks to lead Gilroy while Michael Leininger had a team-high in digs (14) and service points (8). Other contributors for the Mustangs included Renz Campos (nine kills and two digs), Alfred Medenceles (six digs and seven service points) and Greg Calimpong, who distributed 32 assists to go with 10 digs.

The defeat came on the heels of a four-game victory at Alisal last Tuesday: 28-26, 17-25, 25-18, 25-14. Gilroy is now 14-9 overall (7-3 TCAL) and will host first-place Seaside (12-2, 10-0) tonight at 7:30 p.m.
