Gilroy softball’s three-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday as the Mustangs lost their third Tri-County Athletic League game of the season, 5-0, to the Notre Dame Spirits.
The Mustangs went through three different pitchers – Sarah Lira, Ashley Harrington and Melinda Ortiz – on the day but the most glaring reason for the defeat was a lack of hitting.
“Our girls were pumped up and loud the whole game, but our bats just didn’t come through,” Gilroy coach Catherine Hallada said. “We gotta hit to win.”
Lira was solid as a starter, allowing only one earned run in three innings. Unfortunately for Gilroy, errors in the field allowed two more Spirits to cross the plate before Harrington took over in relief. Harrington pitched two innings and allowed two runs before Ortiz pitched the final two scoreless frames.
Alissa Castro and Kylie Herrada each recorded a hit on offense for Gilroy.
Notre Dame improved to 24-4 overall and 7-1 in the TCAL with the win.
The Mustangs (17-6 overall, 5-3 TCAL) will be back on the field Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. when they host North Salinas (7-10-1, 3-4).
