GILROY – Anchorpoint Christian can’t seem to stop scoring points, which was definitely the difference in the Warriors game against Clovis Christian, ranked No. 7 in the state for 8-man football entering the contest.

Killing momentum by matching Clovis play for play, Anchorpoint proved to be a few plays better, improving to 2-1 on the season with a 54-40 victory.

The Warriors came out strong, building a 34-16 lead going into halftime. But Clovis showed it too had some weapons on offense as it mounted a comeback. In the end, though, Anchorpoint proved to be a better team as played a full four quarters.

“My kids showed a whole lot of maturity,” Warriors coach K.C. Adams said. “They got tough and we got tougher.

“That’s a big thing for us, to know that we can not only play with a top team, but win. We finally finished one. We played and played the whole way through.”

After giving up a score to start the second half, Anchorpoint came out with big play of its own, as Christian McCrimmon returned the kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown.

“Christian, he worked out all summer and I don’t know what he did, I guess he ate his Wheaties,” Adams said. “He just gets so much faster on gameday.”

Josh Ignagni continues to make progress at the quarterback position. His ability to run the option effectively has the “offense clicking on all cylinders,” Adams said. The team is currently averaging just under 55 points per game.

While 8-man football is notorious for having Arena football-like scores, Adams is hoping the defense can start putting the clamps down on opposing offenses.

“Once we get that defense down,” he said, “we’re going to be a team to reckon with.”

The schedule doesn’t get any easier Friday, when the Warriors travel to Bakersfield to face Lighthouse Christian (1-2). The Warriors will be facing a squad coming off a 53-8 win over Calvary Christian.

“Anytime somebody puts up those kind of numbers you better be prepared,” Adams said about the upcoming opponent. “But we’re ready for it. We’re healthy right now and we’re working really hard, so I’m looking forward to these kinds of opportunities.”
