Suicide victim found at Uvas Reservoir

Gilroy – The body of a 27-year-old male was discovered by park rangers at Uvas Reservoir. The victim suffered what appears to be a single gunshot wound to the head and has been ruled a suicide by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. He was found Wednesday.

Man arrested after reporting fire

Gilroy – A 35-year-old man high on methamphetamine went to Gilroy Police Department Monday night claiming he had to set his residence on fire to escape gang members who were threatening his life.

However, when officers went to the scene shortly after 5pm, they found nothing but two old fire extinguishers.

“He’s been up for two days and is a little paranoid,” explained Sgt. Jim Gillio. Michael Casas was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of methamphetamine.

City offers disaster workshops

Gilroy – The city will be offering two workshops on disaster preparedness Wednesday from 6 to 8pm.

Discussion will include information on which disasters are most likely to affect the area and what they can do to deal with problems after a disaster occurs. The program will include the viewing of a new video entitled, “Condition Red: Prepare for Disaster.” The video is a wake-up call for families and individuals who have no plan for how they will deal with a disaster in their immediate surroundings. The workshops will also teach the public how to put together a 72-hour emergency preparedness kit.

The ‘Wizard’ is coming to town

Gilroy – City of Gilroy Community Services Department and Children’s Rainbow Theatre present “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” By Tim Kelly. Play will be held at the South Valley Jr. High Cafeteria with the following schedule:

• Fridays, Nov. 11 and 18 at 7:30pm

• Saturdays, Nov. 12 and 19 at 5pm

• Sundays, Nov. 13 and 20 at 5pm

Holiday Lights returns for second season

Gilroy – Bonfante Gardens Holiday Lights returns for an expanded second season. Guests can enjoy a holiday experience that includes thousands of twinkling lights, a decadent holiday feast, holiday shopping, Santa’s Workshop, themed rides and more!. New for 2005, Bonfante Gardens adds a new 40-foot by 80-foot ice rink that families can enjoy together. Holiday Lights runs from 4pm to 9pm Nov. 25-27, Dec. 3-4, 10-11 and 17-23.

Participate in Gilroy’s holiday parade

Gilroy – The Gilroy Downtown Business Association today announced that it is accepting entries for this year’s Holiday Parade on Saturday, Dec. 3 and invites interested individuals and groups to participate.

This year’s parade theme is “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” and it will start at Eighth and Monterey streets and end at First and Monterey streets. The parade committee is looking for floats, vintage cars, performers and others interested in participating. Check-in is 4pm with the parade starting at 5pm.

Monday playreading Series begins

Gilroy – Gavilan College Theater Arts department presents the first Monday Playreading Series: Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz.

Anna in the Tropics is a beautifully poetic play that parallels Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. Cruz, a relative unknown, won the 2003 American Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play Award for Anna in the Tropics. The award was presented to Cruz at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in April. Two days later, the play won the Pulitzer Prize.

The free event will be Dec. 5, at 6:30pm at Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

of Trees benefit

Gilroy – Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park is known for its world famous Circus Trees, but on Friday, Dec. 2, the non-profit theme park boasts about a different kind of tree – Christmas trees and the spirit of giving.

Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park will host the 3rd annual Festival of Trees Premier Dinner and Live Auction benefiting Rebekah Children’s Services.

The $75 per person auction dinner runs 6 to 10:30pm and includes a traditional holiday dinner buffet with savory side dishes and desserts served inside the park’s majestic Snowflake Palace.

Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably for an outdoor winter evening that also includes an exclusive stroll through the park’s Holiday Lights display. There will be no rides in operation during this event.
