Sidney Henry Smith died peacefully at his San Martin home on December 22, 2011, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Born Sept 7, 1934, to Sidney Harrison and Jeanie Taylor Smith in Salt Lake City, UT.
As a youth he was active in Scouting, hunting, fishing and sports. Served as a missionary in Australia for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in Utah Air National Guard. Devoted much time in church service including Bishop, High Counselor, Stake Presidency member, and multiregional Public Affairs director.
As Boy Scout leader, he influenced many young men, as well as his four sons, to become Eagle Scouts. Member of Board of Directors for Saint Louise and O’Connor Hospitals for the Daughters of Charity. Served 13 years on School Board in Morgan Hill. Former member and President of Morgan Hill Planning and Advisory Committee. Rotary Club member.
Received BS, MS, and PhD degrees from University of Utah in Mechanical Engineering, and taught for 2 years as a faculty member. Worked for 28 years at IBM in Boulder, CO and San Jose, CA. During his IBM career he was awarded numerous U.S. Patents and Invention Achievement Awards.
His family, faith and friends were his greatest joys.
Survived by his wife, Margaret (Peggy) and their four sons: Malcolm and Laura (Lollie), Brigham City, UT; Dr. Jeffrey and Danean, Morgan Hill, CA; Derek and Connie, Palos Verdes Estates, CA; Dr. Sidney B. and Rosa, West Richland, WA; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Pre-deceased by his parents and sister, Gloria McDonald.
The family gives great thanks to his caregiver, Una Maka.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 31st, 2011, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1790 East Dunne Ave, Morgan Hill, CA. Private family inurnment.
