United Way Silicon Valley held its South County United Second Annual Breakfast on Thursday to discuss beneficial services and programs assisting residents in Gilroy and Morgan Hill at the Gilroy Elks Lodge at 2765 Hecker Pass Hwy.

Gilroy Mayor Al Pinheiro and Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate were present.

United Way Silicon Valley is currently partnering with local organizations including Rebekah Children’s Services, Community Solutions, Friends of Vision Literacy and St. Joseph’s Family Center. All have received three-year grants from United Way to offer programs that include parenting workshops, employment services, and case management, as well as well as classes to help improve literacy, financial management and computer skills, according to a press release.

United Way Silicon Valley is also supporting efforts to bring dollars back into South County through free tax assistance to help those with low incomes claim the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax benefits, according to a press release.

The release states more than $42,000 in tax credits and refunds were returned to South County residents for the tax year 2010 thanks to the help of IRS-approved Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, sites located in Gilroy and Morgan Hill.

This year, VITA sites are located in Gilroy at Gilroy One Stop, Gavial College Library and Serra Cottage, and in Morgan Hill at El Toro Youth Center.
