The Gilroy Police Department will administer a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2:30 a.m. Sunday on eastbound Leavesley Road between Monterey Road and Murray Avenue.

According to a GPD press release, the checkpoint is in compliance with state law and the department’s Office of Traffic Safety grant, which netted the GPD an additional traffic safety officer in October 2010.

The purpose of the checkpoint is to:

– Increase community education and raise awareness of the negative effects of drunken driving

– Arrest drunken drivers,

– Review the driver’s license of those who pass through the checkpoint

– Ensure drivers are knowledgeable about the “rules of the road” and have shown such ability to DMV

– Ensure the licenses’ have not been suspended or revoked by DMV or the court

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Safety Administration, according to the GPD.
