“I got used to seeing that WWII B-25 bomber parked at South County Airport and now it’s gone. Where did it go? Is it now airworthy or is it hangared for a refurbishing?”
Red Phone: Dear Bombs Away, Don’t worry, the historic aircraft has not flown away. It was moved June 11 across the street to the Wings of History Museum. The aircraft is on loan from Wings of History member Ken McBride through the end of the year. After that it will be moved away from the museum to McBride’s shop, where it will be restored to make it air worthy. Museum staff hope to begin tours of the plane built in 1945 on Saturday. Wings of History Museum is located at 12777 Murphy Road and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. When is graduation day 2012?
“Parents of 2012 GHS seniors are desperately trying to start planning for Grad Night – you might think ‘didn’t we just have Grad Night last week?’. Well, it takes about a year to plan this, especially making any type reservations. Some vendors require nonrefundable deposits.
Red Phone, your mission, should you chose to accept, is to find out the actual date of GHS 2012 Graduation Ceremony. GUSD website (2011-2012 calendar) shows June 1, 2012 as the last day of school, but we need know that this date will not change later. Apparently it has been changed in prior years. If there were any furloughs or other unforeseeable issues between now and then, can we still commit to June 1 for the graduation ceremony? We cannot afford to lose any non-refundable deposit (flowers, food, entertainment).
Red Phone: Dear Mission Impossible, June 1 is currently the scheduled date for the last day of school and for graduation. But that could change if the state ever gets around to passing its budget.
“The calendar currently includes only 175 days of instruction,” said Gilroy Unified School District Superintendent Debbie Flores. “If the state budget improves, we may be able to restore up to five days to the calendar as we did this school year, and thus the last day of school could change. When the state budget is approved and we know the impact on GUSD, a decision will be made about the length of the school year and furlough days.”
So you may want to keep your schedule open or cross your fingers and hope for a quick resolution to the budget mess.
