PREP ROUNDUP: CHS volleyball upends GHS

After vaulting out to a 2-0 lead, the Gilroy High varsity volleyball team withstood an Alisal comeback to eventually topple the Trojans 3-2 (25-23, 27-25, 17-25, 31-33, 15-13) in Salinas on Tuesday night.

The Mustangs (4-9 overall, 2-5 Tri-County Athletic League) withstood a potentially deflating Alisal rally, which included a marathon fourth set.

Gabby Flores posted a team-high in both digs with 13 and service aces with six. The Mustangs totaled 24 aces in the five sets. Ashley McDermott had nine kills and Leilani Mah had six, while Nicole Green and Kayla Guardino contributed 16 and 12 assists, respectively. Samantha Una Dia led the way with five blocks and Leticia Esparza with 17 digs.

The Mustangs remain on the road this week, challenging Notre Dame on Thursday night. First serve is 6:30 p.m.

– The Christopher High varsity volleyball team put a halt to a three-match Monterey Bay League losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Monterey on Tuesday in Gilroy.

Merrett Brown posted 13 kills and four aces, Claudia Ferreira 10 kills and three blocks, Michelle Toves 13 digs and Alex Gerberick 28 assists, to lead the Cougars (15-11 overall, 4-4 MBL) in those categories.

The Cougars travel to Castroville and play North Monterey County on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CHS defeated the Condors 3-1 in the teams’ previous matchup.

FIELD HOCKEY

A subpar performance according to the standards of a now 7-2 Christopher High field hockey team led to a disappointing 1-0 loss to visiting Santa Catalina on Tuesday.

Head coach Lia Peterson said the Cougars had plenty of opportunities in front of the visitor’s cage, but “we failed to make shots, we failed to cover for each other, we failed to talk to each other and so we had a lot of obstructions, third parties and balls passed to the other team,” she said.

The Cougars have little time to hang their heads because a big Mission Trail Athletic League encounter waits Thursday at first-place North Salinas.

TENNIS

The Gilroy High tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Notre Dame on Tuesday. Uzabeth Areland picked up the Mustangs’ point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles.

– On the road in Watsonville to face Monte Vista Christian, the Christopher High tennis team manufactured a road win, defeating the Mustangs 6-1.

The Cougars four singles players all earned team points with straight sets victories, while the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles prevailed in their matches. Results below.
