The Christopher High girls field hockey team had players hovering around the cage all afternoon and managed to sling four goals in a 4-0 victory over York in a Mission Trail Athletic League encounter Wednesday in Gilroy.
The Cougars were knocking on the front door step for much of the first half, before a string of three straight tallies over the final eight minutes propelled them to a 3-0 halftime cushion.
Abby Smith, Arianna Vasquez and Cailin McCarry were credited with the first-half tallies, each coming about two minutes apart. McCarry batted down a crossing pass on a one-timer.
Emma Morely closed the scoring for the Cougars, who are now 6-1 in the MTAL at the halfway mark of the league season. A trip to Monterey to face York once more Friday is next on the docket for the Cougars, who sit in second place behind defending league champion North Salinas. The Vikings are undefeated through their first portion of league play. The two teams meet Oct. 20 in Salinas in a game that could decide the league title.

GHS FIELD HOCKEY
Kristina Chuck dashed 60 yards as the overtime clock ticked less than 10 seconds. Her rushed ended in a heap inside the circle, resulting in a Gilroy High short-corner try – one final chance to steal a win.
However, Katrina Carter’s slap shot from the top left of the circle spilled wide of the cage and left the Mustangs and visiting Leigh High School in a 0-0 final Wednesday.
It wasn’t exactly the game coach Adam Gemar expected from his field hockey team, a group fresh off of a 2-1 victory over Los Altos on Monday – its fourth consecutive in Mount Hamilton Division play.
“We just didn’t click, we didn’t run very hard and I think we played terrible off-ball play,” Gemar said. “Yesterday was a real downer practice – a lot of mopy faces. And today was kind of the same way. In this league, if you have a bad night, you are going to lose or tie.
The outcome sends GHS to 7-1-3 overall and 4-1-3 in the Mount Hamilton. Leigh, meanwhile, is 0-5-2 in league. Both are chasing Archbishop Mitty, which is 10-0 overall and is in town to face GHS on Oct. 19. Home games with Scripps Ranch (non-league, 3:30 p.m.) on Friday and Saratoga (Monday at 5:30 p.m.) are up first.

CHRISTOPHER TENNIS
The CHS tennis team, playing its third match in as many days, dropped a 5-2 contest against Notre Dame on Wednesday in Gilroy.
Two of the matches – No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles went to third set tiebreakers after the Cougars’ contingent rallied to force the extra set. However, both Shelby O’Hara at No. 3 singles and the tandem of Adena Chen and Fredreike Moeller in the doubles match were able to escape with team points.
Emily Barham won her second straight match at No. 1 singles, sweeping Lexie Flores 6-3, 6-1. Emily Collins was awarded a win after her opponent retired.
