PREP ROUNDUP: CHS volleyball upends GHS

The Gilroy high boys and girls water polo teams encountered league powers in the pool Thursday.

The girls fell to the Tri-County Athletic League Mountain Division’s first-place squad Soquel, 16-2. The boys, dropped an 11-3 nod to the TCAL Valley Division’s top dogs Palma.

Angiolina Vanni and Michelle Shields had the GHS goals on the girls side, while Michael Shields scored all three for the boys.

CHS VOLLEYBALL

The second half of Monterey Bay League play didn’t have the ideal start the Christopher High varsity volleyball team was looking for.

The Cougars (14-12 overall, 3-4 MBL) were dealt a three-set loss (25-22, 25-17, 25-16) by Monte Vista Christian on Thursday night in Watsonville.

Merrett Brown and Aly Olvera each tallied five kills, and Alex Gerberick and Hanna Tabron each had three.

CHS TENNIS

The Christopher High varsity tennis team closed out a busy week – four matches in four days – on the wrong end of a 5-2 decision against Alisal.

For the second time this week, coach Patrick McBrearty was forced to make a number of lineup adjustments – this time due to conflicting schedules with other school events, the third-year coach said.

Adena Chen moved from doubles play to No. 3 singles and came through with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Nubia Juarez jumped from No. 4 singles to No. 2 and prevailed 5-6, 6-2, 11-9.
