Police heard a gunshot while searching for Apolo Sanchez, 23, and soon afterward found the Morgan Hill resident dead of a self-inflicted wound Thursday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

Morgan Hill officers and a San Jose police helicopter assisted the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office in the search of Sanchez, who was reported missing by a family member Wednesday night, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Rick Sung.

The family member called police to report Sanchez was missing from his Diana Avenue residence about 11:39 p.m., Sung said. The family member told authorities that Sanchez was suicidal.

Numerous officers from Morgan Hill and the sheriff’s office conducted a search. They found Sanchez’s vehicle near Alicante Drive and St. Katherine Drive in northeast Morgan Hill, near the base of Anderson Dam.

About 12:50 a.m., authorities heard a gun shot, Sung said. Due to the darkness, San Jose police from a helicopter used visual heat detection equipment to find Sanchez’ body. He was dead at the scene, his body located in a field covered with trees and shrubs, about 150 yards from where his vehicle was parked.

Found near his body was a hand gun of unspecified caliber, Sung said. The preliminary investigation indicates that foul play was not a factor in the death, and Sanchez died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sung did not know if the property below Anderson Dam, where Sanchez was found, is public or private.
