PREP ROUNDUP: CHS volleyball upends GHS

Felicia Markfield and Aubrey Kaho, gymnasts from USA Sports, capped a strong competitive season with top-six finishes at the 2011 NorCal Level 5 State Championships hosted by San Mateo Gymnastics in Redwood City this past weekend.

“All the girls worked very hard this season and can be very proud of themselves for an outstanding competition at the state championships,” said Melinda Lawrence, the head coach and owner USA Sports, which has a facility in Gilroy and Hollister.

Markfield, of Hollister, won the bronze medal on vault with a score of 9.325 out of 10. Performing a front handspring, she showed excellent form and outstanding block off the vaulting table, Lawrence said. She also scored an 8.275 on uneven bars, 8.45 on balance beam, 8.65 on floor exercise and 34.70 in the all-around.

Kaho, of Gilroy, placed fifth on uneven bars with a 9.25. 

“I’m especially proud of Aubrey for this performance because she really worked hard all season to improve her routine and it paid off,” Lawrence said.

She also scored an 8.85 on vault, 7.875 on balance beam, 8.67 on floor exercise and a 34.625 in the all-around.

Teammates Cahtarina Ji of Hollister and Sloane Pace of Gilroy, also competed in the state championships. Ji’s scores were 8.95 on vault, 8.75 on uneven bars, 8.475 on balance beam, 8.625 on floor exercise to total a 34.80 in the all-around. Pace scored an 8.725 on vault, 7.45 on uneven bars, 8.325 on balance beam and 8.30 on floor for a 32.80 in the all-around.

USA Sports’ Level 4 team will compete this coming weekend at the NorCal State Championships in Lemoore.
