APTOS – A record of 0-10 was the result Saturday night when the Gavilan College football Rams tried to upset the Cabrillo College Seahawks at Carl Connelly Stadium in the Coast Conference and season finale for both teams.
The Seahawks rallied to a 17-10 lead after one half and held on to defeat the winless Rams 27-17.
The Rams, held without a point in four games and forced to forfeit another this season, scrambled to 17 points while forcing a half dozen turnovers. Cabrillo secured the win with a 197-yard passing performance from back-up quarterback Brent Moyer (12-of-17 passing), four field goals from Matt Burke and two touchdowns by Fernando Alvarez.
“We really played hard, the effort was there,” said Gavilan coach Spencer Gilford.
“The attitude that we wanted was there from the start. We want to keep that attitude up through the offseason workouts as we prepare for next season.”
Anthony Velasquez gave Gavilan a 3-0 lead in the first quarter after Olivarez fumbled a punt away to the Rams at the Seahawk 17. Olivarez responded to the miscue by returning the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to a go-ahead touchdown.
“That was our first lead of the season,” Gilford said. “Our defense has a goal of limiting the other team to 17 points. We gave up 20 with one touchdown and four field goals. The other seven came on the kickoff return.”
Burke connected on three field goals in the first half, while Gavilan added seven points on a Jakari Johnson 40-yard run and a Velasquez PAT.
Olivarez caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Moyer and Burke added a field goal to account for the Cabrillo scoring in the second half. Nate Ellis ran through the Cabrillo defense for a seven-yard paydirt scamper in the fourth quarter.
“Defensively, we played well,” Gilford added. “Our offensive line had its best game of the year.”
Gavilan had only one previous winless season, the 1964 club that went 0-9 in the second year of Ram football.
