The historic Live Oak Creamery edifice is a privately owned unreinforced masonry building. According to city documents it’s estimated to have been built around 1903 near the time when Gilroy’s dairy industry rated second only to agriculture in productivity. The Live Oak Creamery opened in 1908 and produced 1,000 pounds of butter daily using cream from outlying dairies. City records say Gilroy was once the dairy capitol of California. Kristi Abrams, Acting Community Development Director for the City of Gilroy, said there is currently an application on file to get the creamery out of URM status.
