Patrick Cantlay’s solid 2011 campaign will continue at
CordeValle Golf Club in October. The up-and-coming amateur has
received the first sponsor exemption for the Frys.com Open.
Cantlay, a UCLA sophomore, placed in the top 25 in all four PGA
Tour tournaments he has played in this year, including the U.S.
Open Championship at Congressional where he captured the low
amateur title.

Patrick Cantlay’s solid 2011 campaign will continue at CordeValle Golf Club in October. The up-and-coming amateur has received the first sponsor exemption for the Frys.com Open.
Cantlay, a UCLA sophomore, placed in the top 25 in all four PGA Tour tournaments he has played in this year, including the U.S. Open Championship at Congressional where he captured the low amateur title.
Cantlay is No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
“He is a great addition to our field,” Frys.com Open director Ian Knight said in a statement released Tuesday.
Cantlay also tied for ninth at the RBC Canadian Open and tied for 20th at the AT&T National — where he set a course record — and the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.
The California native helped UCLA win four tournaments this year while earning the Golf Coaches of America Association’s Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award.
Cantlay was National Freshman of the Year in 2010, winning the Phil Mickelson Award in addition to being named Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year. He won the 2010 Gifford Collegiate, also at CordeValle, with scores of 67, 69 and 71.
Part of the PGA Tour’s Fall Series, the Frys.com Open features a full, 132-player field with a $5 million purse and $900,00 payout to the winner. The tournament makes its sixth running Oct. 3-9.
