For the first time, the Santa Clara Valley Water District board of directors may vote to decrease their per meeting stipend.
At a public meeting scheduled for Tuesday, the board of directors will consider options for their meeting compensation and day’s service up to 10 meetings a month for 2012. This includes either keeping the current compensation at $286.03 per meeting, approving an increase of up to 5 percent (which would total $300.33), or reduce the amount.
Chair Don Gage said that a decrease will most likely happen.
“A decrease is probably what’s going to happen,” he said. “We need to set the example for the rest of the employees and we need to do that as a board.”
On Oct. 10, 2010 the Board of Directors increased the meeting compensation for 2011 to their current pay rate of $286.03. Gage said the recommendation is to go one step back, most likely bringing the amount down to around $260. In 2009, board directors were paid $260.03.
California Water Code Section 20202 states that a compensation increase received by board members above the amount of $100 per day, may not exceed an amount equal to 5 percent.
Current funds are budgeted in the Board of Director’s Fiscal Year 2012 budget. If the Board increases the rate, a budget adjustment from reserves will be necessary.
