In its search for a new principal to take the helm at Eliot Elementary, Gilroy Unified School District is keeping it in the family.
At least, for now.
Kathleen Taylor, a former Glen View Elementary third-grade teacher of six years and GUSD peer assistance and review teacher for the last four years, was recently named Eliot’s new interim principal.
Taylor is filling the shoes of James Dent, who led the institution to astounding academic heights during his four-year tenure. The school was named one of six elementary schools in Santa Clara County among 209 California schools to be honored with the Title I Academic Achievement Award for 2010-2011.
His departure from Eliot to Gilroy Prep School – a brand new charter located at the former El Portal Leadership Academy campus on IOOF Avenue is set to open in August – was announced in late March.
When Taylor was asked if she would like to see her interim position solidify into something permanent, Taylor replied she is thrilled and honored to be embarking on a new phase in her career.
“My primary objective is to maintain and build upon the dynamic vision and systems set in place by James Dent,” she said. “He actively and successfully engaged students, and they became true partners in the learning process.”
Of new challenges she’ll be facing, Taylor says “a person’s ability to build relationships is key to their success. I’ve been able to do that throughout my career.”
Taylor said, the new position will allow her to build upon that skill while working with an exemplary staff.
“I am in awe of their accomplishments,” she added, of Eliot’s staff. “I look forward to being part of their many achievements to come.”
Regarding the precursor “interim,” GUSD Superintendent Debbie Flores explained Taylor’s position is only secured for the 2011-12 school year.
Flores did, however, acknowledge the possibility of the district’s selection becoming long-term.
Taylor holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Michigan State University and master’s degree in education administration and supervision from San Jose State University, according to her LinkedIn profile. She has lived in Hollister for 25 years.
Peer Assistance and Review is a program that allows experienced teachers to assist permanent and beginning teachers in the areas of subject matter knowledge, teaching strategies and instructional methodologies, according to GUSD’s website.
