Central Coast Section prelims up next
There are only 10 members, and yet, the Gilroy High girls swim team won seven out of the 12 swimming events at Saturday’s Tri-County Athletic League Finals at Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas.
“If we had any depth, we’d easily win,” GHS coach Tom Clark said.
As it stood, aided by league championship performances from Michelle Shields, Anna Brolin, Brittney Malick, Kimmey Davis and the 4×400-yard freestyle relay team (Brolin, Shields, Malick and Christina Collett), the Mustangs finished second, in their final tune-up before the Central Coast Section preliminaries.
Shields and Brolin were both double winners, with Shields touching first in the 50 free (25.91) and 100 free (55.88), coming from behind in the latter race for the victory.
“She’s been doing that a lot lately,” Clark said of Shields’ tactic.
Brolin, a freshman, finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:01.61) and the 100 breast stroke (1:10.94) for her league titles.
“She’s looking pretty good,” Clark said. “At (CCS), everyone is going to be at about the same speed. She likes to be out in front of everybody. Being a freshman, we will see how it goes.”
Brian Pribyl capped his league campaign with a first place in the 100 breast and a second in the 100 fly. The team’s lone varsity senior, along with, Shields Davis, Brolin, Christina Collett, Ashley McDermott and Kyle Collett, will appear at the CCS preliminaries, which are scheduled for Friday at Santa Clara International Swim Center beginning at 2 p.m.
