Gilroy – With the department’s tally complete, Gilroy police officials said officers arrested 25 people for driving under the influence during the holiday season.
The department, along with the California Highway Patrol and county Sheriff’s office, stepped up its focus on drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs by increasing the number of officers on patrol, holding a sobriety checkpoint and deploying teams specifically make DUI arrests. Last year, Gilroy police arrested 20 drunken drivers.
Each year during December through the new year holiday, law enforcement agencies in Santa Clara County join efforts to educate the public about and prevent driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, in a campaign called “Avoid the 13.”
The campaign ran from Dec. 17 through Jan. 2 of this year.

‘Forever Broadway’ now playing at GHS
Gilroy – See the Winter Children’s Theater production of “Forever Broadway,” the all dancing, all singing musical celebrating 100 years of Broadway. Put on by the City of Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie, it runs Jan. 14 through 30, at the Gilroy High School Theater.
Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm, Sunday matinees at 2pm. A special Sunday evening performance will play Jan. 16. All tickets are $11 at the door and all proceeds benefit City of Gilroy Youth programs.

Investigators searching for family of victim
San Jose – The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office is searching for the family of Noé Martinez Resendiz, who was struck and killed while crossing a San Jose street on New Year’s Eve.
Resendiz, 37, a San Jose resident, is 5-foot-10, with black hair, brown eyes and a mustache. He was wearing a black jacket, white T-shirt and brown pants at the time of the accident. His last known address was 1040 S. 12th St. in San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
He was crossing South King Road near Enesco Way at 7:20pm on New Year’s Eve when he was stuck by a Mercedes-Benz driven by 19-year-old Stephanie Truong of San Jose, who has arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives are searching for anyone acquainted with Resendiz or who knows how to contact his family.
