The city was pelted with hail showers Thursday afternoon, as a storm system moved into the region after several days of warmer spring conditions.
Just before 1 p.m., chunks of ice – many the size of peas, some even larger – hammered Gilroy off an on for about 20 minutes.
When the larger stones ceased, smaller hail continued to fall, covering some parts of town in an icy white sheet.
Eagle Ridge resident Cheryl Hock also reported a mixture of hail and snow Thursday.
Precipitation was expected to continue through Friday afternoon in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.
The wet weather contributed to at least one vehicle accident in Gilroy.
Three cars were involved in a collision on U.S. Highway 101 just north of the Monterey Road on-ramp shortly after the hail began to fall, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of a Ford van merged onto the highway’s northbound lanes from Monterey Road, slipping across the roadway and colliding with a Honda Civic and a Nissan Frontier pick-up truck, CHP Officer Jaime Rios said.
No injuries were reported, and CHP officials cleared the roadway by 2 p.m., he said.
