What: 25th annual Mid-Cals
Where: Gilroy High School gym complex
When: Friday and Saturday
Participants: 49 teams, around 600 wrestlers
The Elite Eight: Elk Grove (4th CA), Buchanan (9th CA), Gilroy (10th CA), Turlock (15th CA), Clovis East, Foothill, St. Francis (4th CCS), Hollister (5th CCS)
Weights to Watch:
-116: Ty Costa (Turlock) is 21-3 and a member of the national team. Andre Phillips (Elk Grove) is competing for the first time all year, but finished eighth at state last season.
-144: Eric Brooks (Shasta) was fifth at state and is currently 24-3. Daniel Weatherly (Exeter) finished third at both the Mid-Cals and CCS last year.
-149: Make sure to catch Lewis Gonzalez (Turlock). The Greco All-American won state last year and has posted seconds at the prestigious Reno and Five Counties this season.
-164: Freshman Hunter Collins (Gilroy) entered the scene with a win over Dan Montanez (Monte Vista) at Overfelt last weekend. The top two seeds will likely meet again.
-175: Michael Drake (Elk Grove) is 22-1, won at the Doc Buchanan and finished second at state
