Helping Those in Need

Heidi Linden and Mark Lilga, with the South Santa Clara County Fire Department, load toys into an Avis rental van. The more than 200 toys will be taken to the Lake Tahoe region, devastated by the recent fire, and handed out to children who have been displaced or are suffering trauma. Thousands of firefighters took advantage of the calm overnight conditions to keep the flames that have destroyed 229 homes and forced about 3,500 people to evacuate from spreading, said Rich Hawkins, a U.S. Forest Service fire commander. The amount of land burned remained unchanged since Wednesday at 3,100 acres, and the fire still was 55 percent contained Thursday, Hawkins said at a morning update on the status of the fire.
