New 2007-08 Dairy Princess

Modesto – Kari Kronberg was selected as the 2007-08 Dairy Princess for the California Milk Advisory Board’s District 6. The crowning took place before a crowd of about 450 dairy industry members and their families and freinds June 14 at the Our Lady of Assumption Hall in Turlock.

Kronberg, 19, will represent District 6, which includes Alameda, Mariposa, Merced, Monterey, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Stanislaus and Tuolumne Counties. As Dairy Princess, she will play an important role on teh Communications Services team of the California Milk Advisory Board in meeting community relations objectives.

Plea Deferred in Murder Case

San Martin – Friday, attorneys asked to defer the plea of Tomas Martinez, the 21-year-old man accused of stabbing Juan Lugo, a Gilroy father, to death April 29 behind a Monterey Street shop. Both sides are awaiting critical DNA evidence, they said. Martinez’ plea was rescheduled for 1:30pm Tuesday, July 17 in Superior Court in San Martin.

Internet Literacy for Seniors

Gilroy – Gavilan College is now offering a course to teach adults older than 55 how to use the Internet. Students can now learn how to stay connected to their family and friends through e-mail and instant messaging. Students will learn how to use an e-mail account, search news sources, browse online, use interactive games and research topics of their choice.

The college is offering eight classes in Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Hollister. Students are not required to attend every class. The cost is free for students 55 and older.

Students can register for LIB 730 at any three of the Gavilan College sites located in Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Hollister.

Civil War Battle at Casa de Fruta

Hollister – The public is invited to meet the soldiers in the field and experience camp life first hand! On going living history demonstrations depicting the daily life of the soldiers, women and children of the American Civil War and Victorian Era, located at 10021 Pacheco Pass Highway. Tournament Helps Low Income

Gilroy – Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, the Bay Area’s leading real estate company, will host a Texas Hold ’em tournament June 28 to raise money for the Silicon Valley chapter of Habitat for Humanity, the organization that helps low-income families build their own homes.

The tournament will be held at Troy’s Bocce Room inside the Morgan Hill Bowl, 650 Tennant Station, in Morgan Hill beginning at 6pm. There is a $45 buy-in, which includes a tri-tip dinner. There will be a $20 re-buy and house rules apply. Non-players can also purchase dinner for $10. There will also be a silent auction, and trophies will be awarded following the tournament.

All funds raised during the event will assist Habitat in making the dream of home ownership a reality for low-income families in the Gilroy area. The tournament is just the latest in a series of fundraising events that Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and the Gilroy office will host this summer as part of the company’s annual drive for Habitat for Humanity.
