All-Star Coach Treated Unfairly

CALLER 1: My call is regarding coach Henry Huerta. He is one of the coaches for the Gilroy Major Cardinals Little League team. Last year we came in second, and this year we came in first place. He was told he would coach All-Stars and now he is told he can’t coach All-Stars because he does not have a biological son on the team. He does have a nephew who plays on the team and another nephew who plays on another team. Jeff Wilson was supposed to take his spot, but he didn’t show up for practice. We’re not mad or anything. We just feel cheated and let down. It’s not a new season. We all hang out together and do stuff together. It’s not a title we’re looking for – third base coach, first base coach, assistant coach, assistant assistant coach, whatever. What matters is that they’re out there on the field for the kids – it’s the position that matters.

And…

CALLER 2: I am calling in response to the Gilroy Little League hypocrisy. My son is a player on the Cardinals Little League Team. They made All-Stars but they took one of the coaches away, stating that the reason was because he had no kids on the team. But Reuben Reyes, the coach for the 11-year-old All-Stars, has no children at all. But he is still coaching. I think that is extremely unfair and they are being extremely hypocritical and I’d like someone to look at it.

And…

CALLER 3: I’d like to give you my thoughts on a Little League coach who is coaching the tournament of champions who is being asked to not coach the All-Star team because he does not have a biological child on the team.

GREEN PHONE: Thanks for your calls. From your overwhelming support, it looks like he was well respected in the community and was respected by the players. Brian Christman is the manager of the team and Mario Talmante is the assistant coach. They are scheduled to be joined by Jeff Wilson, who is replacing Henry Huerta. But now Huerta’s season must end while his team continues on. Five of the 13 kids on the All-Star team played under Huerta on the championship team. We’d like to hear from you. Do you think he was treated fairly or not? Call or e-mail the Green Phone.
