Guess Who’s Back? Everything Football

Yeah, Green Phone, Everything Football checking in on the Mustangs handling their business, 49-21 over Alisal Friday night. The offense looked OK at times, but although they scored 49 points, they had a lot of dropped passes, overthrows and three dropped interceptions.

But a shout-out to coach (Rich) Hammond to re-think his shuttle pass play, because everyone knows it’s coming. You might wanna have a variation off of that play.

The defense gave up 21 points to a team that has basically two running plays and could not complete a pass, and (Gilroy) must have given up 300 yards rushing, which seems to be a sore spot. They haven’t had a good game really since the Oak Grove game. And with three big games coming up it seems they need to re-think their process. It seems like the same three or four guys are making all the tackles. They gotta figure something out. It might be time for coach Hammond to “Remember the Titans” and get some of his best athletes on the other side of the ball to make some plays – mainly Dante Fullard and Sean Hale, and maybe a couple linemen.

Three big games coming up, it’s for all the marbles. I cant wait to see this. Go Mustangs! Everything Football, out.

& Green Phone:

Dear Everything Football,

Let’s start by saying – oh, one second. We have another call coming in…

Yeah, Green Phone, this is Everything Football again. I just wanted to amend a couple of comments I had in my first call. As far as the shuttle pass goes, or the shovel pass, it’s a great play and coach Hammond’s a great coach, but it seems like everybody knows that’s coming nowadays, and it seems he needs a variation off that play. Either same formation, same motion, but a different play or a decoy other than shuttle pass itself. As far as defense, what I meant was with (Ryan) Costa and (Tony) Travis being out, they need some help in the secondary and the D-line. Get some of the offensive lineman that aren’t playing, put them on the D-line. Other than (Brandon) Elam and (Ethan) Ogle, there’s not a lot of people making tackles out there, and (Lukas) Fortino. So, I mean, hey, Palma is gonna run the ball all day and we gotta figure something out.

Once again, go Mustangs!

& Green Phone:

We know what you’re thinking. Everything Football just upgraded his cell phone plan and now has unlimited minutes. We don’t have unlimited word count though so let’s get to it. The shovel pass is a play that works well when another team is getting a good pass rush, similar to a screen pass. It sucks the defenders up before slipping the ball behind the blitz. For a team that ran a reverse on the very first play of last week’s game, we wouldn’t expect the offense to be vanilla and continue to run the same plays over and over. That is if you call over 400 yards passing vanilla.

As for players going both ways, this is something the coaching staff has been seriously considering. With Costa going down, that has only created an even greater need for athletes and playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. (As far as we know, Tony Travis practiced Monday and is expected to play Friday). Ironmen to keep a look out for in the final three games are Fullard, Hale, Marshad Johnson and possibly several offensive linemen.

We disagree that Gilroy hasn’t played a good game since Oak Grove though. The Mustangs may not have played a complete game yet, but did you really want to see them beat Alvarez 80-0? They were good enough to beat Salinas in a poor performance, they gritted through a passionate game at Pacific Grove and they tormented the Alisal Trojans, winning by four scores.

If you want a potentially great game – that showcases Gilroy players on a great stage – we present you with this Friday night: Homecoming against Palma. The winner will most likely take the Tri-County Athletic league title.

And as for you Everything Football, one call should be sufficient next time.
