Gilroy sister city under siege by fire

TECATE, MEXICO

Gilroy’s sister city, Tecate, Mexico, is among the West Coast cities under siege by the fire. As of Thursday, the Harris Fire charred 84,000 acres and destroyed 97 residences. The fire, which started Sunday, was only 20 percent contained. Some of the homes lost belonged to relatives of Gilroyans.

Local firefighters move south

SAN DIEGO COUNTY

A Gilroy-led strike team helping to battle fires in Southern California moved south to continue battling the blazes. The 30-person team – led by a Gilroy battalion chief and including two Gilroy firefighters, a Gilroy engine and staff and vehicles from around Santa Clara County – was reassigned Thursday to the Poomacha Fire in northern San Diego County.

As of Thursday, the fire charred 38,500 acres and destroyed 60 residences and 19 outbuildings. The fire, which started Tuesday and was only 30 percent contained, threatened an additional 2,000 residences.

The strike team was originally sent south Monday to fight the Buckweed Fire in central Los Angeles County. That fire, now 100 percent contained, burned 38,356 acres and destroyed 21 residences and about 40 outbuildings. It also damaged an additional 13 residences and 17 outbuildings.

Joyful harmonies at St. Stephens

Gilroy

Specs, a local Christian acoustic trio, bring their harmonies to St. Stephen’s Coffee House Mini-Concert Series at 7 p.m. Saturday. Band members include Art Schoenstadt, Bruce Ahlvin and Bill Warne. Specs CDs will be for sale after the concert. Other artists for the evening include Danielle Hughes, a very talented local Christian singer-songwriter and others. The concert, refeshments and coffee are free.

Coyote Valley Plan meeting canceled

San Jose

The November meeting of the Coyote Valley Specific Plan Task Force has been canceled because it falls within the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The next meeting, Dec. 10, is planned to be longer.
