Inexperienced Gilroy found it difficult to get out of the blocks Wednesday.
With Pioneer doing an excellent job of blocking, GHS was unable to adjust. And Pioneer took advantage in a 25-17, 25-14, 25-14 win in San Jose.
“It was a different kind of team,” GHS coach Sue Grogan said. “They had a lot more blocking than what we had played against, so we had a little trouble with it.”
The hitting errors, Grogan could understand. But 13 service errors were more than she found acceptable.
“I think we might have been a little intimidated by their blocks,” Grogan said. “We were hitting strong in the first game, and then I think we held back in the second and third games.”
Kevin Bruce had seven of Gilroy’s 19 kills, and had two of its four blocks. Mike Leininger had nine digs. Greg Calimpong had eight assists and Renz Campos had eight service points.
“We had a little trouble receiving serve,” Grogan said. “Because they were a different type of team, we had trouble adjusting to what they were doing. A lot of our kids are getting used to playing at the varsity level. They are learning about the different ways that teams play.”
Gilroy returns to action Saturday in the SLO Town Tournament. Its league opener is Tuesday at home against San Benito.
