Morgan Hill – Gilroy got a glimpse of the future in sophomore David Pribyle and freshman Eddie Malik in a meet at Sobrato.

The Gilroy boys won 98-67, and the Mustang girls won 93-77.

Pribyle won the 100-yard breaststroke and timed a career best 58.96 in the 100-yard butterfly, bringing him just over a second from qualifying for the Central Coast Section finals.

“I feel great,” said Pribyle. “I’ve been working hard to get to this point. I’ve been working myself hard for practice to build up my kick and endurance.”

The Mustangs were led by freshman Eddie Malik, who won the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM. Aaron Moon captured the 100 backstroke.

Sophomore Melissa Davis won the 500-yard freestyle for the girls. Megan Collett won the 100 backstroke and Jenny Ailes was victorious in the 100 breaststroke.

Senior Daniel Shields and freshman Bella Comin both pulled out wins for the 50 and 100-yard freestyles for the Mustangs. Gilroy also got wins in both the boys and girls medley relays.

GHS coach Tom Clark was satisfied with the team’s performance.

“We put in a good effort today,” said Clark. “The group together as a whole performed well. This is the best bonding team that we’ve had, and that is why we put in a good effort.”

The Mustangs were complemented with a strong performance by the junior varsity squad as well.

The girls’ relay team pulled off a close victory in the 200-yard medley.

“I’m really proud,” said Gilroy JV coach Valerie Hunt. “They got a chance to apply everything they learned in practice and it showed. My kids know that if they perform well, they can be pulled up to varsity. They recognize that and try to perform to the fullest.”

As for Coach Clark, his season-long plans are to see improvement in his swimmers.

“I’m hoping to see a few of my swimmers qualify for CCS,” said Clark. “But I’ll be happy if we just get faster times.”

The Mustangs next face Alvarez at 3:30 pm March 9 in Salinas.
