Despite being down three starters, Gilroy found a way to win during a season where victories have been few and far between.

It was a struggle, but the Mustangs edged host Watsonville 4-3 Thursday to gain their second Tri-County Athletic League win this week.

“It wasn’t very pretty,” GHS coach John Langer said. “As long as we got the ‘W’ I’ll take an ugly or pretty win.”

Perhaps No. 1 singles player Ben Wilson set the tone for the match. The Gilroy senior struggled against Gilbert Dillicana before emerging with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 win. Wilson is now 9-3 for the season.

“He gets the job done even when he’s not at his best,” Langer said.

Matt Chan, on the other hand, made short work of Javier Vargas at No. 2 singles, breezing 6-0, 6-0.

Watsonville No. 3 singles player J.J. Rodriguez dominated fill-in Corey Gardner 6-3, 6-0, but Wildcatz No. 4 singles player Isaiah Castro had to come from behind to defeat reserve Cody Brown 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Once again, the Gilroy Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams came through even though Langer had to juggle them as well.

At No. 2, Esteban Delgadillo teamed with Mitch Souza for a 6-4, 6-0 win over Jose Martinez and Chris Barrajas. At No. 3, Zach Singh and Vinh Vong beat Adrian Alanis and Jose Guzman 6-2, 6-4.

Watsonville won at No. 1 doubles as Jose Villanueva and Robert Gross beat Sai Erdenchemeg and Sang Min Park 6-2, 6-4.

“I was a little on edge but we played all right,” Langer said. “They (Wildcatz) have improved. I was happy to get the win.”
