Gilroy – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter need help to find loving families for the many homeless companion animals at the shelter and in foster homes.
Visit the FOSMAS pet fairs Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5pm, at Petco-Morgan Hill (corner of Tennant and Monterey); and at Petco-Gilroy (San Ysidro Avenue north of the Gilroy Premium Outlets) where many companion animals, including cats, dogs, and rabbits will be featured.
Stop by to find a new furry friend; make a donation to help cover spay/neuter, food, and litter expenses; find out how to become a foster parent; or sign-up to volunteer.

Information for parents of kindergartners
Gilroy – St. Mary School will host a “Parents Only” information evening for kindergarten prospective parents for the coming school year 2007-08. The event will take place at the school at 6:30pm, Jan. 24, in the kindergarten classroom.
Attendees will have a chance to meet the principal and kindergarten teachers to find out how their child would spend the day in the St. Mary School kindergarten program.

Time to register for charity Texas Hold ‘Em event
Gilroy – The Super Showdown II Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament, the 10th in a series of charity events developed by the Gilroy Community Services Department, will be held at 10am, Saturday Feb. 3 at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St.
Registration for the one-day tournament begins at 2pm, Wednesday, with a deadline of 5pm, Jan. 25.
Team entry fee is $60 for each four-person team. The tournament is open to men and women at least 18 years of age. Team members will play at different tables. Proceeds from the tournament benefit youth, teen and senior programs within the Community Services Department.

Don’t miss hands-on ‘Science Alive’
Gilroy – This event is a hands-on science experience for students in grades 6 to 8. Students are invited to participate in a day of hands-on workshops that make science fun.
Students may select among 19 exciting workshops including A Cow’s Eye View, Astronomy, Geology, and “Help Build A Trebuchet.” The day will begin with a check-in at the Gavilan College Student Center. Lunch will be served in the student center, and will be followed by the Keynote Presentation. The day will end with a raffle drawing and prizes. Workshops for parents in English and Spanish are also offered, including information on preparing for college, and the availability of financial aid.
The cost is $10 per participant, and a limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Fee includes the cost of the workshop, lunch and snacks. Event is Feb. 10, 8am to 3pm.
